Hi all,

In the committee meeting yesterday we discussed how we can help people to promote events they are putting on.

We’ve decided to set the club night on the first Wednesday in every month as New Bulletin Night – when we make a point of looking at and
chatting about the events in the new bulletin.  As well as a normal social night, it’s a chance to find out more about the events that are
on in the month and to see which catch your interest; so come along and get involved.

If you’re putting an event on, do try to come along to promote your event.  It’s a chance to sell your event and encourage lots of people
to come along – and we all know that the best way to get people to come on your events is to tell people about them!  Don’t worry -
there’s no need to stand up and make a speech (unless you really want to…), just come along and chat about what you’re planning over a drink.

We on the committee will also be there to promote things, so if you’re putting on an event and you think you can give us useful information, let us know at the events address.  If it’s your first event we’ll be happy to give additional support if you’d like.  And if you can’t make that evening then let us know and we’ll tell people about your event – though of course it’s always better if you can do it yourself, because you know your event best (and we might have lots of other events to promote!)

Obviously, every club night is a chance to talk about events – and if you’re putting on an event, you might well want to keep on telling
people about it at other times as well!  But often this doesn’t happen at all, so we’re making this a chance for us all to get together;
those who might be interested in going on events know that people will be there to talk about them, and people who are putting on events know that it’s their chance to promote them.

So, the first New Bulletin Night is next week – the first of September, in the usual venue.  Come along and tell people about your
event, find out about events that month, and just meet up and have a drink!

This weekend we’ve been pretty busy:

On Friday a few members went to see The Penguin Cafe at the Town hall for their excellent performance. It was great, you should have been there! This was the first event this month and at this rate it should be good:

Members also yesterday went to see the BIG SING as part of the Chestival and saw the Rhino’s starting to appear:

Later in the month some of the members will be going to the Spitting Feathers Beer Festival in Waverton so we might see you there:

It was a simple plan we had a couple of weeks ago, to go for a simple stroll around town, visiting a few of our favourite spots and relaxing with friends.  We decided to visit a couple of nice pubs and then a few we had heard about but never visited.  In the end it became a pub crawl, a student pub crawl at that: designed to visit the cheapest pubs in town (plus a couple of nice ones for balance).  If you want to know how it went track down one of the attendees at a club night but this was the plan:

7:30 – The Red Lion (Northgate, next to Eastern Glory), then to the centre and along the Rows to
8:15 – The Boot (Eastgate Row North, top level), then crossing Pepper Street to
9:00 – The Falcon (Bridge Steet), and not far to
9:45 – The Brewery Tap (also Bridge Steet), then around the walls to
10:30 – The Albion (near Forum Gardens), and past the amphitheatre to
11:15 – The Square Bottle (Foregate Street) and the very short stumble around the corner to
12:00 – Forest House (Love Street) and cross the road to
12:45 – Brannigans

Sadly Brannigans shut itself down (we talk no responsibility) but not a bad plan hey ;-)

In case you are a prospective member don’t be put off by this, we do also see plays, attend comedy nights and go for walks but it is winter…

Making hedgehogs at the chocolate factory.jpg

We had a busy few days this last weekend that all conspired to make our chairman very happy, 4 of her favourite things came together in two days:

Thanks to Neville for organising a trip to the chocolate factory in Tarporely where we all made chocolates with Charles.  None us knew what to expect but in the end all had fun and the chocolate hedgehogs we walked away with didn’t last long ;)   Some of us then stayed on a little longer for a meal and pint in the cosy Rising Sun pub just up the road.

The chair’s second favourite thing was of course Ireland winning at rugby: few of the rest of us were as happy but as least as we were watching it in The Mill Hotel the beer was excellent.  Some of took a break then and went for a walk around the walls while some stayed until we went to Harkers (more good beer) and rounded the night off with a very nice curry on the other side of the road at City Spice.

So a big thank you from all of us who were there, especially the chairman, to Neville, Emma and Roger for organising those events.

This month’s bulletin is out now so please book on to let the organisers know you’ll be coming.  And next month’s diary is open so if you want to put any events on yourselves this is your fist hint… ;)

ps. Alex has give me some photos from last year’s trip to Snowdon and they’re in the member’s area if you want to see them.

In the last couple of weeks IVC have been to a couple of comedy clubs (at Alexander’s (very good) and Theatre Clwyd to see Silky and his chums (even better)).  In both cases we sat at the front!  Whose bright idea was that?  Oh well, we survived the experience and had a great time on both occasions and were fit enough to go on a day trip to Manchester to see Da Vinci – The Genius exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry:

No pictures I’m afraid they weren’t allowed! However it was an excellent trip to Manchester and the exhibition. Train was packed in both directions so were lucky we managed to find seats, though not together! There were seven of us and on arrival in Manchester we all headed to Don Giovanni’s (appropriately an Italian restaurant) for a meal before heading to the exhibition! All of us ate too much so could barely walk after! The food was excellent, as was the exhibition. All of us were stunned at how much Leonardo Da Vinci did in his life that have a huge bearing on our lives’ today. Everything from the perfection of ball bearings, to cranes and the principle of helicopters right through to his artwork and sculpture, the obvious examples being The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. A very enjoyable day.

Why are pirates called pirates?

Because they arrrr… ;)

To any members reading this Happy New Year from the committee and to any people thinking of joining or wondering what we do: Happy New Year from all of us too!

On Saturday night a group of IVC members partied hard at Telfords and some of them then went for a ride on Sunday! Did any of you see the weather?  Well, they were lucky enough to find a break in the clouds and (for most of the ride) didn’t get too wet!

Well, that’s another busy month over and a new one started with a bang ;)

In addition to the usual badminton, dancing, cinema nights, meals and pub trips in the last couple of weeks we have been to the CAMRA beer festival in the Guildhall where we saw Mark Radcliffe on drums and tasted a selection of very nice ales, a few of us dressed up for the Halloween party at Bar Lounge where we had fun.  Since then after a comedy night in Mold on Thursday, a lot of us met up on the walls to watch the fireworks dispay over the Roodee on Saturday night before retreating from the cold to the Brewery Tap and The Cross Keys.
